City Cases and Snapshots

The LGSE Roadmap shares city cases and snapshots from across North America and around the world.
The appendix provides relevant local government materials such as sample ordinances, surveys and
legislation
, e.g., the Hennepin County Fix-It Clinic Release Form; the Data-sharing partnership agreement between the City of Los Angeles and Waze; and San Francisco's short-term residential rental ordinance.

Co-Working and Incubation:
​Models of Shared Space

Toronto, ON (Canada) and Chandler, AZ (USA)
The City of Toronto, Ontario, and the City of Chandler, Arizona, have extended support to co-working initiatives.  In Toronto, the Centre for Social Innovation provides shared work spaces and incubates organizations driven by a social mission.  In Chandler, Gangplank offers co-working space and incubates tech businesses. Read the Case Studies (PDF).

Coordinating Fix-It Clinics
Hennepin County, MN (USA)

Recognizing the value of goods repair to their waste management goals, the local government of Hennepin County, Minnesota, serves as coordinator of monthly Fix-it Clinics. Read the Case Study (PDF).

Strategic Approaches to the Sharing Economy
Vancouver, BC (Canada); Seoul (South Korea)

Both the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seoul, South Korea, have taken on an active role in fostering and guiding the development of the Sharing Economy. From the extension of funding for business development and R&D, to providing space for sharing activities, and encouraging broader social uptake through advertising, these cities have been boldly experimenting in the Sharing space. Short-Term Rentals
Portland, OR (USA) and Austin, TX (USA)

The cities of Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas have risen to the challenge presented by tight rental markets and the rising popularity of short-term rentals. Portland has changed its zoning bylaws to accommodate a new category for short-term rentals; whereas Austin has imposed a new tax on short-term rentals and requires licenses for operators. Transport Cocktail:
An Integrated Mobility System

Montreal, QC (Canada)

The Société de Transport de Montréal (STM), the authority responsible for managing Montréal’s network of bus, metro, heavy rail, and paratransit services, is undertaking an experiment in integrated mobility. Read the Case Study (PDF).
Partners in Project Green:
Materials Exchange Network

Greater Toronto, Region of Peel, York Region, City of Brampton, and City of Mississauga, ON (Canada)

Partners in Project Green is an organization run by Toronto and Region Conservation, which provides a materials exchange network service to partners in the Pearson Eco-Business Zone, Greater Toronto Area, the Region of Peel, the City of Brampton, York Region, and the City of Mississauga.  Read the Case Study (PDF).
